RCPS Parents Letter Momo Challenge Hoax 2019
March 4, 2019

RCPS Parents,

We wanted to make you aware of what seems to be the latest viral challenge targeting children. It is called the Momo Challenge and it centers around a disturbing character who suggests dangerous tasks for kids to perform, including potentially hurting themselves or hiding for an extended period of time. The "Momo" threatens those who do not perform the tasks. The “Momo Challenge” is a game found on several internet platforms (YouTube, WhatsUp, Fortnite).

The purpose of this is to inform you about the challenge and to urge you to closely monitor your child’s computer and internet use. Although firewalls and parental controls are very helpful, we are finding that savvy tech users can sometimes move faster than firewalls.  Adult supervision and diligent monitoring is critical with youth and technology.

It is important to become familiar with the “Momo Challenge” and talk to your child about the dangers involved; remind them that “Momo” is not real. Here are helpful topics to address with your child:

Turn off any device when something scary/upsetting appears.
Only use parent-approved technology with permission and supervision.
Report any inappropriate or upsetting content to an adult immediately.
Remember to always use good judgment and not act on a bad choice because of someone else’s direction.
Do not believe everything that friends and the internet tell you. Check your sources and talk with a trusted adult.
Do not give out personal information online to anyone that they you not know.
