Community and Student Support

The Department of Community and Student Support is dedicated to providing support to students, parents, and the faculty of the Rockdale County Public Schools (RCPS) via the expertise of staff and through partnerships with community agencies. Community and Student Support incorporates a variety of specialists that include school psychologists, school social workers, school counselors, school-based mental health therapists, graduation coaches, career center coordinators, school nurses and clinic assistants, and the liaison for homeless children and youth. In addition, the Department of Community and Student Support coordinates the homeless education program, Section 504, social and emotional learning, Parent Academy, college and career readiness, alcohol/drug education and support, attendance, crisis response, suicide education, mentoring and the Response to Intervention process which provides students with more academic and behavioral support by way of the regular education setting.

In 2009, the Department of Community and Student Support was awarded the Safe Schools/Healthy Students grant that included five goals: Prevent violence in our schools and community; Promote healthy lifestyles free from alcohol, tobacco, and drugs; Protect our students from bullies and other threats; Provide school based mental health services; and Prepare our children to be ready for kindergarten. This grant ended in June of 2014; however, because the Rockdale County Board of Education understood the need to continue these programs, RCPS was able to sustain all of the initiatives of this grant.

In September 2014, the Department of Community and Student Support received a grant to address the mental health needs of youth; certified Youth Mental Health First Aid trainers are available to provide training to school staff and the community.
